He was born into a rajputana family of uttrakhand that has been serving in the Indian army for generations.Bipin Rawat belonged to the third generation of his family that had served the Indian Army . His father Lakshan Singh Rawat also served the Indian Army as a Lt.General . Laxman Singh Rawat had risen from ranks ( from a Soldier) to become the vice cheif of army staf. Bipin Rawat's Uncle Describes him a very smart boy since childhood . He said" Bipin has managed to get where he is only through sheer hard work and honesty . We were very sure that he would acheive great  success , and he has proved us right ." Bipin Rawat did his schooling at Cambrian Hall School , Dehradun and St Edwards School in Shimla . After Completing his schooling he joined National Defence Acadmy (NDA) khadakwasna , Pune and the Indian Military Academy , Dehradun , where he was awarded the sword of honour . After passing out from IMA he was commisoned into 5th batallion of 11th Gorkha Riflle , on 16th december 1978;the same unit as his father's.

During his career span of 37years , Bipin rawat was awarded various gallantary awards including the param vishist seva medal for his distinguished services.
 
On 17 December 2016 , the government of India has appointed Mr. Bipin Rawat as the 27th cheif of army staff ,  suspending 2 seniors Lieutenant General Praveen Bakshi and P M Harzi . With this he became 3rd officer  from Gorkha Brigade to become cheif of army staff after feild marshal Sam Manekshaw and General Dalbeer Singh Suhag.
